Bell's Marsh - Moncton

June 2, 2006

Least Bittern (Ixobrychus exilis)

The star attraction at the marsh is a fairly vocal (as much as they get) Least Bittern that has been present for several days.  Over the span of about 1.5 hours the bittern made one brief appearance, the remaining time spent skulking in the reeds.  Rare in NB, this was a lifer for me.

American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus)

Marsh Wren (Cistothorus palustris)

Other birds photographed included an American Bittern (being chased by a Red-winged Blackbird), a Marsh Wren (one of many heard in the marsh, and a relatively uncommon bird in NB as well), and this pair of Ring-necked ducks.

Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris)

Also seen on this brief stop at the marsh: Virginia Rail, Sora (H), Swamp Sparrow, Warbling Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, many other waterfowl, several warbler spp., etc.
