Costa Rica - Gallery of Favorites

(back to main Costa Rica trip page)

Here are a few favorite pictures from the trip. I took over 2400 (with Pattie adding another 50 or so) and surely I could find a couple :-)
These are either pictures I thought were good portraits of the bird, or it was a special bird and didn't really matter if it was a good picture or not.   They're in a loose taxonomical order.  All of the pictures I kept can be referenced from the trip list thumbnail page.

A very lucky find; it was getting quite dark at this point, and we could here the Tinamou in the forest. I simply pointed my camera into the dark and hoped for the best (composition and focus). Surprisingly, the flash left great after images on our eyes, and we could see it quite clearly. The pictures aren't great, but I'm happy to have something!

Pattie and I found this bird while strolling through the resort's grounds. \n\nThis one is healthy, but disturbingly there was another wandering around that had lost one foot, and the other was at risk from twine that was wrapped around it. Andy suspected it had been kept on a string, and that the other foot would eventually fall to the same fate; we tried to catch it but weren't successful.

Gray-necked Wood-Rail (Aramides cajanea)

Mealy Parrot (Amazona farinosa)

Red-lored Parrot (Amazona autumnalis)

We got up a little earlier as our guides had heard this owl calling over the past couple of nights. We tried all over the resorts grounds and were getting ready to quit and leave for La Selva when we heard it call in the distance. Andy was able to bring it in, and Gustavo with his portable anti-aircraft search light was able to pick it out for us.
