Violaceous Trogon (Trogon violaceus)

Leo picks me up early and we head to the Pacific coast.  Pattie stayed behind and did her own thing around the resort.  We had a nice breakfast along the way at Costa Rica's equivalent of a greasy spoon.  We arrived at Carerra National Park around 8, which was a little late to really see a lot of birds.  Actually, it was tough, and we walked for over 3 hours in the increasing heat, but managed a few interesting birds, giant iguanas, and it was a great introduction to the forests of Costa Rica.

Checkout the picture at left, which is the rainforest that lines the bank of the Tarcoles.  There is an American Pygmy Kingfisher in the picture, which I might add is taken at full 400mm.

At right, is an iguana, and Leo trying to get a picture of it.

After lunch (and a brief rain shower) we went on a cruise with Crocodile Man Tours, and Leo and I ended up the only two on board.  We didn't go for the crocodile feeding, but you can see some amazing pictures on their website -- maybe next time if we bring the kids.

And speaking of kids, these three at left were having some luck fishing, but no way would I do it with all the crocs in the river!

So, although the Tarcoles River, AKA the Crocodile River, lived up to its name, with numerous very large specimens all around us, we instead had a very personalized, productive river birding tour. Boat-billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius)
